We are covered in snow here in NYC, and I’m counting down the weeks til my health and wellness getaway to Costa Rica with Samana Health Retreats. YAY! But first, to help me mentally and physically prep, I had a personal analysis session with Ashley Weber, who is a Naturopathic Doctor, and co-leader of the retreat. We discussed my health and lifestyle goals, and how I can get the most out of this transformative experience.
After describing my day-to-day activities and chaotic work schedule, the two main points Ashley recommended I focus on are relaxation and stress management. I have lots of energy and am usually juggling multiple projects at once. So, prior the retreat, I have to try to start setting specific boundaries for work and make more time for personal relationships—AND PUT DOWN THE PHONE!!! She mentioned it’s always good to step away from the electronics at least one hour before bed.
Ashley suggested bringing along a certain book as well: Just One Thing: Developing a Buddha Brain One Simple Practice at a Time, by Rick Hanson (She talked about how reading before bed helps you to shut down mentally). And, once we are in Costa Rica we will be practicing meditation and breathing techniques to lower stress and improve those sleep patterns.
Diet and digestion were also a topic that we touched on as two possible sensitivities I might have. So leading up to the retreat, Ashley suggested reducing my coffee and dairy intake two weeks before the trip to prep. Also, a cup of warm water with lemon first thing in the morning can help stimulate the liver and other organs to improve digestion throughout the day.
At the retreat, the food will be gluten free, dairy free, sugar free, and prepared by a private chef, along with lots of juices and smoothies in addition to healthy meals. YUM! I’m super psyched see how this all affects me mentally and physically and can’t wait to share more with you soon!
